Ignition

Instead of the pilot light, furnaces have an ignition. Electronic ignitions take the place of pilot lights. When the thermostat tells the electronic ignition a space is too cold, the ignition turns on the furnace and begins the heating process.

Ignition System

A system in heating appliances that initiates combustion by providing a spark, flame, or electric arc to ignite the fuel-air mixture.

Ignition Temperature

Lowest temperature of a fuel at which combustion becomes self-sustaining.

Incomplete Combustion

The partial oxidation of the combustible components in a fuel type.

Indirect Heating

A heating process in which heat is transferred to a material through an intermediary medium, rather than directly applying heat to the material itself.

In-Floor Heating

A type of radiant heating system in which heating elements or tubing are installed beneath the floor surface to provide warmth to the space above.

Infrared Thermometer

A device used to measure surface temperatures by detecting infrared radiation emitted by objects, commonly used in heating systems for diagnostics and monitoring.

Inlet Temperature

The temperature of the fluid or air entering a heating system or component, which influences the overall performance and efficiency of the system.

Insulated Pipe

A pipe in heating systems that is surrounded by insulation material to minimize heat loss or gain during fluid transport.

Insulation

Material used to reduce heat loss or gain by inhibiting the transfer of heat between the interior and exterior of a building or heating system.

Intake Vent

An opening in a heating system that allows outside air to enter the system for combustion, ventilation, or fresh air supply.
