Eskabe Vent Pipe, DVEL20

The DVEL20 and DVEL8 share the same coaxial direct vent system design — inner exhaust pipe surrounded by an outer combustion air intake pipe — but the two models are different physical sizes, and their vent assembly components are specific to each model. The DVEL20 is the largest model in the Eskabe DVEL range at 17,000 BTU/h with two atmospheric burners, dimensions of 20 inches high by 27-3/8 inches wide, and a weight of 48.7 lbs — significantly larger than the DVEL8 at 8,000 BTU/h with one burner and 27 lbs. The larger heat output and physical size of the DVEL20 require vent assembly components sized appropriately for that model. DVEL8 vent parts such as the 5134 Vent Pipe are not interchangeable with DVEL20 vent parts — always order vent replacement parts specific to the model being serviced.

The DVEL20 is the highest-output model in the Eskabe DVEL gravity direct vent range at 17,000 BTU/h, designed to heat spaces of 425 to 495 square feet. It uses a thermostatic SIT 630 gas control valve for temperature-regulated operation, two atmospheric burners, and piezoelectric ignition. The DVEL8 at the entry level produces 8,000 BTU/h with a manual COPRECI 18700 valve, one burner, and no thermostat — it is suitable for spaces up to 200 square feet. The DVEL12 in the middle produces 11,000 BTU/h with a thermostatic SIT 630 valve, one burner, and a heating area up to 275 square feet. All three models use the same coaxial direct vent design, operate without electricity, and vent through walls up to 10 inches thick. The DVEL20 owner's manual specifies the following minimum clearances from combustible construction: 0 inches at the rear to the mounting bracket, 6 inches at the sides, 36 inches at the top, and 6 inches from the floor to the top of any carpeting or tile. The vent assembly requires a minimum clearance of 1 inch between the pipes and any combustible materials throughout its passage through the wall, and the vent terminal at the exterior must be at least 18 inches away from an adjacent wall. The minimum clearance between the vent cap and any combustible material at the exterior termination is 1-3/4 inches. These clearances must be maintained at the installation site before the appliance is installed, and any adjacent combustible surfaces that do not provide the required clearance must be protected appropriately.

The DVEL20 with its standard injector orifice is rated for operation at elevations up to 2,000 feet above sea level without adjustment. For operation at higher elevations, Eskabe offers optional altitude-specific injector orifices — one for 2,001 to 4,500 feet, one for 4,501 to 8,500 feet, and one for 8,501 to 10,000 feet. At higher altitudes the lower atmospheric air density reduces combustion air availability, and the altitude-specific injectors reduce the gas flow rate to maintain the correct air-to-fuel ratio for safe and efficient combustion at the installation elevation. The correct altitude injector must be installed by a qualified service technician in accordance with the DVEL20 installation instructions and local codes — using the standard injector above 2,000 feet without the appropriate altitude adjustment can cause incomplete combustion and unsafe operation.

The inner vent exhaust pipe is directly exposed to the combustion gases produced by the appliance burner during every operating cycle. These gases contain water vapor, carbon dioxide, and — depending on the fuel type and combustion completeness — trace amounts of acidic compounds including carbonic acid formed when CO₂ combines with condensed moisture. During startup and shutdown cycles when the pipe has not yet reached full operating temperature, moisture can condense on the inner pipe wall and remain in contact with the pipe material, accelerating corrosion over time. Gas-fired direct vent appliances typically operate at lower flue temperatures than solid-fuel appliances, which can increase the amount of condensation that forms inside the exhaust pipe. Over a heating appliance's service life of many years these repeated condensation events can degrade the inner pipe material, eventually requiring replacement to maintain a safe and properly functioning vent system.
