In practice, the fixed-length 58DVA-12 is used as one of the primary building blocks of the vent run alongside other fixed-length sections, while the 58DVA-08A extension is used at the end of the planning process to bridge any remaining gap between the total achieved by the fixed sections and the precise total required — similar to the relationship between whole-inch and fractional length increments in a measurement system.

The DirectVent Pro 5x8 fixed-length rigid pipe range includes the 58DVA-12 at 12 inches, as well as sections in 6-inch, 24-inch, 36-inch, 48-inch, and 60-inch nominal lengths. All sections share the same .020-inch aluminum inner wall and .018-inch galvanized steel outer wall construction with fully unitized twist-lock connections, and the same 1-1/2 inch per joint installed length deduction applies to all. The black 58DVA-12B is typically selected for pipe sections that are visible inside the living space — for example, the vertical rise section of a gas stove installation that is visible in the room — where the black exterior better coordinates with the appearance of the appliance and the room's interior. The galvanized 58DVA-12 is generally used for sections that are not visible, such as those inside wall cavities, attic spaces, inside chase enclosures, or in utility areas. Both can be freely combined in the same vent run since the performance specifications are identical — the outer finish does not affect the functional connection between sections.
