Description

Description

The DuraVent DirectVent Pro 12-Inch Pipe Length, part number 58DVA-12, is the galvanized 12-inch fixed-length rigid pipe section for the DirectVent Pro 5-inch by 8-inch coaxial direct vent system for gas and propane appliances.

The 58DVA-12 is a standard fixed-length rigid pipe section providing a nominal 12-inch length increment in a DirectVent Pro vent run — the shortest standard fixed-length rigid section in the DirectVent Pro 5x8 range. It is used where a short precise length increment is needed to achieve the total vent run length specified by the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions, whether at the beginning of a run close to the appliance, at the end of a run near the termination, or at any intermediate position where a 12-inch section fills the required increment more efficiently than a shorter adjustable extension section.

Like all DirectVent Pro rigid pipe lengths, the 58DVA-12 is a fully unitized coaxial section — the inner pipe exhausts flue gases from the appliance to the outside while the outer pipe simultaneously draws combustion air from outside into the appliance through the annular space between the two pipes.

The inner wall is .020-inch aluminum and the outer wall is .018-inch galvanized steel. No gaskets or sealants are required at connections unless specifically required by the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions. Fully unitized twist-lock construction connects inner and outer walls as a single unit. No beads or hems.

The 58DVA-12 is available in black painted outer finish as the 58DVA-12B for visible interior vent sections. To calculate the installed length contribution of the 58DVA-12, subtract 1-1/2 inches per joint — the 12-inch nominal section contributes approximately 10-1/2 inches of installed length after the joint deduction. Always confirm the vent system and configuration against the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions before installation.

What's Included: One DuraVent 58DVA-12 DirectVent Pro 5-inch by 8-inch galvanized 12-inch fixed-length rigid pipe section.

Installation Limits: Fixed 12-inch nominal length — subtract 1-1/2 inches per joint for installed length calculation, giving approximately 10-1/2 inches installed length per section. No gaskets or sealants required unless specified by the appliance manufacturer. Confirm vent system approval against the specific appliance manufacturer's installation instructions before installation. All installation must comply with local building codes.

Compatibility: Compatible with the DuraVent DirectVent Pro 5-inch by 8-inch coaxial direct vent system for direct vent gas and propane stoves, heaters, and fireplaces. Not compatible with DirectVent GS pipe.

Product FAQ

How does the 58DVA-12 fixed-length pipe section differ from the 58DVA-08A pipe extension?

The 58DVA-12 and the 58DVA-08A serve different roles in a DirectVent Pro vent run. The 58DVA-12 is a fixed-length rigid pipe section — its nominal length is a fixed 12 inches and it contributes a consistent approximately 10-1/2 inches of installed length after the joint deduction at each installation. The 58DVA-08A is a telescoping adjustable pipe extension that can be set to any length within a 3 to 7 inch range, providing a variable fine-tuning increment. In practice, the fixed-length 58DVA-12 is used as one of the primary building blocks of the vent run alongside other fixed-length sections, while the 58DVA-08A extension is used at the end of the planning process to bridge any remaining gap between the total achieved by the fixed sections and the precise total required — similar to the relationship between whole-inch and fractional length increments in a measurement system.

What other fixed-length pipe sections are available in the DirectVent Pro 5x8 range alongside the 58DVA-12?

The DirectVent Pro 5x8 fixed-length rigid pipe range includes the 58DVA-12 at 12 inches, as well as sections in 6-inch, 24-inch, 36-inch, 48-inch, and 60-inch nominal lengths. All sections share the same .020-inch aluminum inner wall and .018-inch galvanized steel outer wall construction with fully unitized twist-lock connections, and the same 1-1/2 inch per joint installed length deduction applies to all. The longer sections — 36-inch, 48-inch, and 60-inch — are the most efficient for building out long vent runs with the fewest joint connections, while the shorter 12-inch and 6-inch sections allow precise length adjustment at the ends of the run. All sections are available in both galvanized and black painted outer finishes, with black sections featuring laser-welded exterior seams.

How is the total installed length of a DirectVent Pro vent run calculated when the 58DVA-12 is included?

The total installed length of a DirectVent Pro vent run is calculated by summing the nominal lengths of all pipe sections in the run, then subtracting 1-1/2 inches for every joint connection in the run. Each 58DVA-12 section contributes a nominal 12 inches minus 1-1/2 inches for its joint — approximately 10-1/2 inches of installed length per section. For example, a run using three 58DVA-12 sections and one 58DVA-36 section would have a total nominal length of 72 inches and a total of four joint deductions of 1-1/2 inches each — 6 inches total — giving an installed length of approximately 66 inches. This total must be compared against the appliance manufacturer's specified minimum and maximum vent run lengths to confirm the configuration is within the permitted range before the installation is completed.

When should the galvanized 58DVA-12 be used versus the black 58DVA-12B?

The galvanized 58DVA-12 and the black 58DVA-12B are identical in construction and performance — the choice between them is purely aesthetic and depends on where the pipe section will be located in the installation. The black 58DVA-12B is typically selected for pipe sections that are visible inside the living space — for example, the vertical rise section of a gas stove installation that is visible in the room — where the black exterior better coordinates with the appearance of the appliance and the room's interior. The galvanized 58DVA-12 is generally used for sections that are not visible, such as those inside wall cavities, attic spaces, inside chase enclosures, or in utility areas. Both can be freely combined in the same vent run since the performance specifications are identical — the outer finish does not affect the functional connection between sections.

Why must the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions be checked before selecting DirectVent Pro components?

The appliance manufacturer's installation instructions are the governing authority for all aspects of the direct vent system configuration — they specify which direct vent system or systems the appliance has been tested and certified with, the required vent pipe diameter, the maximum and minimum total vent run lengths, the maximum horizontal run permitted, the required minimum vertical rise, the maximum number of elbows permitted, and whether sealant is required at connections. DirectVent Pro is specified by the majority of major gas stove and fireplace manufacturers in the US and Canada, but the specific model, configuration, and total run length must always be confirmed against the appliance instructions. Using the wrong vent system, exceeding the maximum run length, or installing an unsupported configuration can void the appliance certification, void the warranty, and create a safety hazard.

What other DirectVent Pro 5x8 components complete a system using the 58DVA-12?

A complete DirectVent Pro 5x8 installation incorporating the 58DVA-12 uses longer fixed-length sections — the 58DVA-36, 58DVA-48, or 58DVA-60 — for the main run length, with the 58DVA-12 and 58DVA-6 shorter sections used for precise length adjustment. Elbow sections such as the 58DVA-E90 90-degree elbow manage direction changes. The 58DVA-08A adjustable pipe extension provides fine-tuning within a 3 to 7 inch range at the end of the planning process. A wall thimble manages the wall penetration in through-the-wall horizontal configurations. A wall or roof termination cap provides the exterior weather-tight termination, and wall straps support long vertical sections. All components must remain within the DirectVent Pro 5x8 system family and must be confirmed as appropriate for the specific appliance through the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions.
