Description

The DuraVent DuraTech 5-Inch Stainless Steel Chimney Pipe, part number 5DT-48SS, is a 48-inch length section of DuraTech double-wall all-fuel Class A chimney pipe with a 5-inch inner diameter and stainless steel outer casing.

At 48 inches nominal length, the 5DT-48SS is one of the two longest standard sections available in the DuraTech 5-inch stainless steel range and is the most efficient standard section for covering long unobstructed vertical runs with the fewest joint connections — each 5DT-48SS section contributes four feet of nominal height while requiring only one connection point in the run.

The 5-inch inner diameter and 1-inch double-wall construction produce the system-standard 7-inch outer diameter.

The DuraTech double-wall construction of the 5DT-48SS features an inner wall of .020-inch 430 stainless steel and an outer wall of .016-inch 430 stainless steel, with DuraVent's Thermal Tech ceramic refractory blanket insulation encased between the two walls.

The Thermal Tech insulation maintains high flue gas temperatures inside the pipe for strong consistent draft while keeping the outer wall cool, reducing clearance to combustibles to a minimum of 2 inches. The inner wall is 25 percent thicker than competitive chimney products for an additional margin of safety. Twist-lock connections require no locking bands or mechanical fasteners, and the 1-inch wall design allows installation through standard 16-inch on-center framing.

The 5DT-48SS nominally contributes 48 inches to a DuraTech chimney run — to calculate its actual installed length contribution, subtract 1-1/4 inches for the joint overlap at its connection point, giving an installed length contribution of approximately 46-3/4 inches per section. The 5DT-48SS is also available in the 5DT-48SSCF variant which includes additional protective carton filler for shipping.

The 5DT-48SS is listed to UL 103 HT and the Canadian S610 standard, and carries a DuraVent limited lifetime warranty when installed by a qualified professional installer.

What's Included: One DuraVent 5DT-48SS DuraTech 5-inch inner diameter, 48-inch length, double-wall stainless steel chimney pipe section.

Installation Limits: Minimum 2-inch clearance to combustibles required at all points. Subtract 1-1/4 inches per joint overlap to calculate installed length. For use with appliances tested and listed for a 2,100°F HT chimney system only. DuraVent limited lifetime warranty applies only when installed by a qualified professional installer — licensed contractor, CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, NFI Certified Specialist, or WETT Certified Professional. All installation must comply with local building codes and the DuraTech installation instructions.

Compatibility: Compatible with the DuraVent DuraTech 5-inch Class A double-wall all-fuel chimney system. For use with wood stoves, fireplaces, furnaces, boilers, ranges, water heaters, and other appliances fueled by wood, oil, coal, or gas that are tested and listed for use with a 2,100°F HT chimney system.

Product FAQ

Why use the 5DT-48SS 48-inch section rather than two 5DT-24SS 24-inch sections?

A single 5DT-48SS provides 48 inches of nominal height with one connection point, while two 5DT-24SS sections also provide 48 inches of nominal height but require two connection points. Fewer connections in a DuraTech chimney run are preferable from both an installation efficiency and long-term reliability standpoint — each connection point is a potential location for moisture infiltration, misalignment, or joint loosening over time. For straight, unobstructed vertical runs where access to intermediate pipe sections is not required, using the longest available sections minimizes the total number of joints and simplifies the installation. The 48-inch section is particularly efficient in long through-the-roof or multi-storey installations where large vertical distances must be covered.

What is the actual installed length of the 5DT-48SS after accounting for joint overlap?

The nominal length of the 5DT-48SS is 48 inches. DuraVent specifies that 1-1/4 inches must be subtracted from each joint overlap when calculating the installed length of a DuraTech pipe section. For the 48-inch nominal section, the installed length contribution after the joint overlap deduction at one connection end is approximately 46-3/4 inches. This deduction must be applied at every connection point throughout the full chimney run when calculating the total installed height. The relatively small ratio of the 1-1/4 inch deduction to the 48-inch nominal length makes the 48-inch section the most length-efficient standard section in terms of installed height delivered per nominal inch ordered.

What is the 5DT-48SSCF variant and when should it be ordered instead of the 5DT-48SS?

The 5DT-48SSCF is the carton-filler variant of the 5DT-48SS — both are the same DuraTech 5-inch 48-inch stainless steel chimney pipe section in construction and specifications. The CF suffix indicates the pipe is packed with additional protective carton filler material inside the shipping carton to cushion the pipe during transit, reducing the risk of damage to the pipe section from shipping impacts. The CF variant is available for the longer DuraTech pipe sections — 24-inch, 36-inch, 48-inch, and 60-inch — where the greater length of the section increases the lever arm for handling forces and makes shipping damage to the pipe ends more likely without additional packaging protection. Both variants are the same installed product.

Can the 5DT-48SS be used in an enclosed chimney chase?

Yes. The DuraTech 5DT-48SS can be used in an enclosed chimney chase installation where the chimney pipe runs within a framed or masonry chase structure rather than through open building spaces. In chase installations, the 2-inch minimum clearance to combustibles must be maintained between the outer surface of the pipe and the combustible framing or lining of the chase throughout the full height of the run. The attic insulation shield requirement does not apply to chimney runs that are enclosed in a chase in the attic space — the chase structure itself provides the necessary separation from attic insulation in that configuration, per DuraVent's installation instructions.

What building code requirements govern the termination height of a DuraTech 5-inch installation?

Building codes require the chimney termination cap to be positioned at least 3 feet above the roof penetration point and at least 2 feet higher than any portion of the building within 10 feet of the chimney. These requirements ensure the chimney terminates above the zone of wind turbulence created by the building roof and adjacent structure, which is critical for maintaining consistent positive draft at the termination cap. When the chimney extends more than 4 feet above the roof penetration, an extended roof bracket is required to brace the exposed chimney section against wind loads. The 5DT-48SS 48-inch sections are well suited to building the total chimney height needed to meet these termination height requirements efficiently with minimal joint connections.

What other DuraTech 5-inch components typically combine with the 5DT-48SS?

A complete DuraTech 5-inch through-the-roof installation using the 5DT-48SS typically also includes shorter sections — 5DT-06SS, 5DT-09SS, 5DT-12SS, or 5DT-24SS — to achieve the precise total installed height after joint deductions. The 5DT-CS24 ceiling support box or 5DT-FRS firestop radiation shield manages ceiling and floor penetrations. The 5DT-IS attic insulation shield is required if the run passes through an attic. A roof flashing matched to the roof pitch, a storm collar 5DT-SC, and a chimney cap complete the exterior termination. Elbow kits 5DT-E15KSS or 5DT-E30KSS accommodate any required offset routing. All components must remain within the DuraTech 5-inch system family.
