Duravent Stove Pipe DuraTech Firestop Radiation Shield, 5"

The 5DT-FRS firestop radiation shield performs two key functions at floor and ceiling penetrations. It centers the chimney pipe within the framing opening to maintain the required 2-inch clearance to combustibles uniformly around the pipe at the penetration point, preventing the pipe from shifting toward the framing during or after installation. It also provides the code-required fire separation at the penetration by blocking the direct pathway between the chimney pipe and the combustible framing materials at the floor or ceiling level, reducing the risk of heat transfer or fire propagation through the penetration opening. The adjustable design of the shield accommodates varying framing dimensions at the penetration and the shield plate fits on the underside of the ceiling to cover the framing opening with a finished appearance.

The 5DT-FRS is required at floor and ceiling penetrations where a DuraTech support box is not installed. A DuraTech support box — such as a ceiling support box or floor support box — performs both the structural support function and the fire separation function at a penetration point where the chimney is supported, and in those locations the support box itself provides the code-required penetration protection so the 5DT-FRS is not additionally needed. Where the chimney passes through an intermediate floor or ceiling that is not a support point — for example, a floor level between the appliance and the first ceiling support location — the 5DT-FRS provides the required fire separation at that penetration without providing structural support. Both components serve related but distinct purposes within the DuraTech installation.

At roof penetrations, the fire separation and weather protection functions are provided by the roof flashing and storm collar components rather than by a firestop radiation shield. The roof flashing is installed at the roof deck level to provide a weather-tight seal around the chimney pipe as it exits through the roof, and it also provides the structural separation between the pipe and the combustible roof deck framing at that location. The 5DT-FRS is designed for interior floor and ceiling penetrations where the chimney transitions between occupied building levels — at those interior locations the fire separation requirement applies but a weather seal is not needed. The roof penetration requires a different set of components suited to the exterior environment.

The 5DT-AIS Attic Insulation Shield is a two-part component — consisting of a collar and a base with a mesh sleeve at the top — that fits over the 5DT-FRS firestop radiation shield in the attic space. It is required whenever the DuraTech chimney run passes through an attic because loose-fill attic insulation and debris can accumulate against the chimney pipe in the attic if left uncontained, creating both a fire risk from combustible material in contact with the hot chimney and a practical maintenance problem. The Attic Insulation Shield creates a protected zone around the chimney pipe in the attic space that keeps insulation and debris at a safe distance from the pipe, while the mesh sleeve at the top prevents material from falling down into the shield from above.

One 5DT-FRS is required for each floor or ceiling penetration where a support box is not used. In a single-storey installation where the chimney passes through one ceiling and then one roof, the ceiling penetration may be managed by a support box or by a 5DT-FRS — one unit would be required if the 5DT-FRS approach is used rather than a support box at that level. In a multi-storey installation, each intermediate floor penetration that does not have a support box requires one 5DT-FRS. The number required therefore depends on the number of floor and ceiling levels the chimney passes through and whether each of those penetrations uses a support box or the firestop radiation shield approach. The DuraTech installation instructions specify which penetrations require each component type.

The 5DT-FRS works alongside the straight pipe sections — such as the 5DT-09SS and 5DT-12SS — that pass through the penetration it protects. The 5DT-AIS Attic Insulation Shield fits over the 5DT-FRS wherever the chimney runs through an attic. The DuraTech ceiling support box or floor support box is the alternative to the 5DT-FRS at penetrations where structural chimney support is also required at that level. The 5DT-E15KSS and 5DT-E30KSS elbow kits may be used in the chimney run above or below the firestop location to route around obstructions. The roof flashing, storm collar, and chimney cap complete the system above the final ceiling or floor penetration at the roof exit level.
