Description

The NordicStove Toby Oil Controller, part number NROIL68, is a mechanical fuel flow regulator designed to control the delivery of heating oil to the vaporizing burner of the NordicStove 68 series freestanding oil-fired room heater.

The Toby DVR5 controller regulates fuel flow through a variable-position dosage slot on a metering fuel tube, allowing the operator to adjust the flame output across the calibrated operating range between the minimum setting of 2.0 and the maximum setting of 7.0 for the 68 series. This controller version does not include the optional thermostat assembly and operates exclusively through manual adjustment of the control knob by the operator.

The Toby DVR5 is a fully mechanical regulator that operates without electrical power. A float-type carburetor within the controller automatically maintains the correct fuel level in the regulator bowl, preventing over-fueling and burner flooding under normal operating conditions. A flooded-bowl safety reset lever allows the operator to restore the controller to normal operation in the event of a flooding condition.

A fuel filter screen on the inlet prevents foreign matter from reaching the metering components. The controller also incorporates an over-heat shut-off device that stops fuel flow if the regulator itself becomes overheated. The NROIL68 is factory-calibrated for Number 1 grade heating oil and is compatible with Number 2 heating oil, automotive diesel, marine diesel, and kerosene with appropriate adjustment of the high and low burn settings. The optional thermostat control device can be added separately if automatic room temperature-based modulation is desired.

What's Included: One NordicStove Toby DVR5 oil controller calibrated for the 68 series heater with minimum flow rate setting of 2.0 and maximum flow rate setting of 7.0. Thermostat assembly is not included.

Installation Limits: This oil controller is calibrated specifically for the NordicStove 68 series heater and must not be used on NordicStove models of other series, which require controllers calibrated to different flow rate ranges. The stove must be level for proper low-burn operation. High burn must be adjusted before low burn whenever the controller settings are changed. Volatile fuels including gasoline, white gas, or any fuel mixture containing gasoline must never be used.

Compatibility: Compatible with NordicStove 68 series freestanding natural draft oil-fired room heaters using the Toby DVR5 oil control system. Accepts Number 1 heating oil, Number 2 heating oil, automotive diesel, marine diesel, and kerosene.

Product FAQ

What is the difference between the NROIL68 and the NROIL68T oil controller?

The NROIL68 is the base Toby DVR5 oil controller for the NordicStove 68 series without an attached thermostat assembly, requiring the operator to manually adjust the control knob to change the burn rate. The NROIL68T is the same controller paired with an integrated non-electric thermostat assembly consisting of a fluid-filled sensing bulb, coiled connecting tube, adjustment knob, and actuation lever that automatically modulates fuel flow between low and high burn settings in response to ambient room temperature. Operators who want manual-only control select the NROIL68, while those who want automatic temperature-based fuel modulation select the NROIL68T.

How does the Toby DVR5 oil controller regulate fuel flow to the NordicStove 68 series burner?

The Toby DVR5 regulates fuel flow through a slotted dosage fuel tube positioned within the controller body. When the operator turns the control knob, the portion of the dosage slot that is exposed to the fuel path changes, increasing or decreasing the volume of fuel entering the burner. A float-type carburetor maintains a consistent fuel level in the regulator bowl throughout operation, ensuring that the dosage slot delivers a predictable and calibrated fuel volume at each knob position across the 2.0 minimum to 7.0 maximum range for the 68 series.

What fuels can be used with the NordicStove NROIL68 oil controller?

The NROIL68 is factory-calibrated for Number 1 grade heating oil and is compatible with Number 2 heating oil, automotive diesel, marine diesel, and kerosene. When a fuel other than Number 1 heating oil is used, the high and low burn settings of the controller may require adjustment to achieve proper flame output, efficiency, and stable low-range operation. Volatile fuels including gasoline, white gas, and any mixture containing gasoline must never be used under any circumstances, as these fuels create a severe fire hazard in a vaporizing burner system.

What is the correct sequence for adjusting the burn settings on the NROIL68 controller?

When adjusting the burn settings on the Toby DVR5 oil controller, the high burn setting must always be adjusted before the low burn setting. Two screws affect the fuel flow rate at the high setting — the high adjusting screw and the high limit screw — and both must be set correctly before the low burn adjustment is made. Reversing this sequence or adjusting the low burn setting first can result in improper calibration of the operating range and may lead to unstable flame behavior at one or both settings.

What safety features are built into the NordicStove NROIL68 Toby DVR5 controller?

The NROIL68 Toby DVR5 incorporates three primary safety features. The float-type carburetor automatically controls the fuel level in the regulator bowl, preventing over-fueling and burner flooding under normal operating conditions. The flooded-bowl safety reset lever allows the operator to manually reset the controller if a flooding condition does occur. The over-heat shut-off device monitors the temperature of the regulator body itself and stops fuel flow to the burner if the regulator reaches an unsafe temperature, providing a secondary protection layer against overheating in the fuel delivery system.

Can the optional thermostat be added to the NROIL68 controller after purchase?

Yes. The Toby DVR5 oil controller is designed to accept the optional NordicStove thermostat assembly, which can be attached to the top of the controller after purchase. The thermostat assembly mounts directly onto the oil controller with the tip of its actuation lever positioned over the thermostat fuel metering pin. Once installed, the thermostat automatically modulates fuel flow between the low and high burn positions in response to ambient room temperature without requiring electrical power. When the thermostat is added, the controller's burn settings must be verified and the thermostat recalibrated to match the current output range of the controller.
