The correct DuraTech roof flashing is selected based on the pitch of the roof at the chimney penetration location. Roof pitch is expressed as a ratio of vertical rise over horizontal run — for example, a 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. The 5DT-F6 covers pitches from flat — 0/12 — through 6/12. To measure the roof pitch, use a level or pitch gauge against the roof surface at the chimney penetration location and read the rise-to-run ratio. If the roof pitch at the penetration is 6/12 or shallower — including a flat roof — the 5DT-F6 is the correct flashing. If the pitch is steeper than 6/12, a different DuraTech roof flashing part number covering the steeper pitch range must be selected instead. Measuring the pitch at the actual penetration location is important because roof pitch can vary in complex roof geometries.

The roof flashing seals the opening in the roof deck around the chimney pipe from below, but the top edge of the flashing cone fits around the pipe with a gap that allows the pipe to pass through without being rigidly connected to the flashing — this gap is necessary to accommodate thermal expansion and movement of the chimney pipe during operation. Without a storm collar sealed above this gap, water can track down the exterior surface of the chimney pipe and enter beneath the top edge of the flashing cone into the building. The storm collar installs on the chimney pipe above the flashing and is sealed with high-temperature sealant or caulk at its top edge to prevent water from entering between the pipe and the collar — forming a watertight barrier that directs water away from the flashing top gap. The 5DT-SC storm collar for 5-inch and 6-inch DuraTech pipe is the appropriate storm collar for use with the 5DT-F6.

DuraVent offers additional DuraTech 5-inch roof flashing part numbers for steeper pitch ranges beyond the 5DT-F6's 0/12 to 6/12 coverage. A separate flashing covers the 7/12 to 12/12 pitch range, and another covers 13/12 to 18/12. For very steep pitches beyond 18/12, additional flashing options are available. Each flashing is designed to accommodate the specific geometry of the roof surface at the given pitch range, ensuring a properly angled flashing base that sits flush against the roof surface and provides a weather-tight seal. Selecting the wrong pitch range flashing — for example, using a 0/12 to 6/12 flashing on a 9/12 pitch roof — would result in a poor fit that cannot be sealed correctly, creating a high risk of water infiltration at the roof penetration.

Galvalume — steel coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy — is the standard construction material for DuraTech roof flashings because it provides adequate weather resistance and corrosion protection for an exterior component in a typical residential roofing environment, while being more formable and cost-effective than stainless steel for the large flat base sections required in a flashing. Galvalume's aluminum-zinc coating provides superior corrosion resistance compared to galvanized steel in most residential roofing environments, and its formability allows the flashing base to be shaped to conform to the roof pitch and overlap the roofing material correctly. Stainless steel outer wall options on DuraTech pipe sections are recommended for outdoor weather-exposed pipe sections, but the galvalume flashing is the standard DuraVent specification for the roof flashing component itself.

The 5DT-F6 is a standard galvalume roof flashing designed for conventional shingle or tile roofing applications. Metal roofing systems — standing seam, corrugated, or other metal roofing profiles — often require specialized flashing configurations because the raised seams, corrugated profile, or expansion and contraction characteristics of metal roofing create different sealing challenges than flat shingle surfaces. For metal roof installations, consult the roofing manufacturer's recommendations for chimney flashing details and confirm whether the standard 5DT-F6 flashing is compatible with the specific metal roofing system or whether a specialized flashing configuration is required. The DuraTech installation instructions also provide guidance on flashing installation for different roofing materials.

Above the 5DT-F6 roof flashing, the DuraTech 5-inch exterior roof termination requires the 5DT-SC storm collar installed on the chimney pipe immediately above the flashing cone and sealed with high-temperature sealant, followed by the required chimney pipe sections extending at least 3 feet above the roof penetration point and at least 2 feet above any portion of the building within 10 feet of the chimney, and a chimney cap at the top to prevent rain, snow, debris, and animals from entering the flue while allowing flue gases to exit. If the chimney extends more than approximately 4 to 5 feet above the roof penetration, the 5DT-XRS extended roof bracket is required to brace the exposed chimney against wind loads. The locking band 5DT-LB may optionally be applied at joints in the exposed above-roof section for additional security.
