Description

The DuraVent DuraTech Roof Support, part number 5DT-RS, is the roof support component for the DuraTech 5-inch Class A double-wall all-fuel chimney system. The roof support is designed for cathedral ceiling and free-standing appliance installations where the chimney pipe must pass through an angled or sloped ceiling and the building's roof structure simultaneously — providing structural support for the chimney run at the roof level rather than at a ceiling framing level inside the building.

In this installation configuration the chimney pipe descends from the roof support down through the cathedral ceiling to the appliance below, with the roof support bearing the structural load of the chimney run above and below the support point at the roof. The 5DT-RSTC trim collar is available separately as the companion component that conceals the gap between the chimney pipe and the ceiling cut-out at the interior cathedral ceiling surface when the roof support is used.

The roof support configuration is the appropriate installation approach for cathedral or vaulted ceiling applications where the angled ceiling structure makes a conventional interior ceiling support box impractical — in these configurations the chimney exits directly through the roof from the appliance below without an intermediate flat ceiling penetration to carry the support. The roof support is installed at the roof deck level and supports the chimney on the roof structure itself.

The 5DT-RS is suitable for use with the DuraTech 5-inch all-fuel chimney system and is listed for use with wood stoves, fireplaces, furnaces, boilers, ranges, water heaters, and other appliances fueled by wood, oil, coal, or gas. Installation must comply with the DuraTech installation instructions for roof-supported configurations, and a roof flashing, storm collar, and chimney cap are additionally required to complete the weather-tight exterior termination above the roof support.

What's Included: One DuraVent 5DT-RS DuraTech 5-inch roof support. Trim collar 5DT-RSTC and roof flashing, storm collar, and chimney cap are sold separately.

Installation Limits: For use in roof-supported chimney configurations — cathedral ceiling and free-standing appliance installations. Roof flashing, storm collar, and chimney cap are required to complete the exterior roof termination. Trim collar 5DT-RSTC sold separately conceals the gap at the interior ceiling surface. All installation must comply with local building codes and the DuraTech installation instructions for roof-supported configurations. DuraVent limited lifetime warranty applies only when installed by a qualified professional installer.

Compatibility: Compatible with the DuraVent DuraTech 5-inch Class A double-wall all-fuel chimney system. For use with wood stoves, fireplaces, furnaces, boilers, ranges, water heaters, and other appliances fueled by wood, oil, coal, or gas that are tested and listed for use with a 2,100°F HT chimney system.

Product FAQ

When is a roof support used instead of a ceiling support box in a DuraTech installation?

A roof support is used in place of a ceiling support box in cathedral ceiling and free-standing appliance installations where the angled or vaulted ceiling geometry makes it impractical to install a conventional interior ceiling support box at the ceiling framing level. In a cathedral ceiling, the ceiling surface follows the slope of the roof rafters from the peak downward — there is no flat horizontal ceiling at a lower level that would provide an accessible framing location for a ceiling support box. In these configurations, the chimney passes from the appliance up through the angled cathedral ceiling and exits directly through the roof, with the roof support providing the structural support point at the roof deck rather than at an interior ceiling framing level.

What is the 5DT-RSTC trim collar and is it required with the 5DT-RS?

The 5DT-RSTC is the DuraTech trim collar for use with the roof support, made of galvanized steel painted black. It conceals the gap between the chimney pipe and the ceiling cut-out at the interior cathedral ceiling surface when the roof support configuration is used. While the trim collar is not a structural or code-required safety component, it provides the finished decorative appearance at the point where the chimney pipe passes through the interior ceiling surface, covering the rough opening edges for a clean professional finish. The 5DT-RSTC is sold separately from the 5DT-RS and should be ordered alongside the roof support for any installation where a finished interior ceiling appearance is desired at the cathedral ceiling penetration point.

What is the difference between the 5DT-RS roof support, the 5DT-ARS adjustable roof support, and the 5DT-XRS extended roof bracket?

The 5DT-RS, 5DT-ARS, and 5DT-XRS are all DuraTech 5-inch roof-level structural support components but serve different applications. The 5DT-RS is the standard roof support for cathedral ceiling and free-standing appliance installations. The 5DT-ARS is the adjustable roof support that accommodates different roof pitches through its adjustable design, supporting a maximum total chimney length of 45 feet above and 20 feet below the support point, and is also noted as ideal for cathedral ceilings. The 5DT-XRS is the extended roof bracket used specifically when the chimney extends more than approximately 4 to 5 feet above the roof penetration and requires additional bracing against wind loads — the extended bracket legs can be adjusted to lengths from 67 to 114 inches with no drilling required. Each serves a distinct structural support role depending on the roof pitch, chimney extension height, and installation geometry.

What other components are required to complete a DuraTech chimney installation using the 5DT-RS roof support?

A complete DuraTech 5-inch roof-supported installation using the 5DT-RS requires straight pipe sections in the appropriate nominal lengths — such as the 5DT-06SS, 5DT-09SS, 5DT-12SS, 5DT-24SS, 5DT-36SS, 5DT-48SS, and 5DT-60SSCF — to build the chimney run from the appliance to the roof support and above it. A roof flashing matched to the specific roof pitch provides a weather-tight seal at the roof deck. A storm collar seals around the pipe above the roof flashing. A chimney cap terminates the system at the top of the exposed chimney section above the roof. The 5DT-RSTC trim collar finishes the interior ceiling surface at the cathedral ceiling penetration. Elbow kits may be required if the run needs any offset routing around obstructions below the roof support level.

Does the 5DT-RS eliminate the need for a firestop radiation shield in a cathedral ceiling installation?

In a roof-supported cathedral ceiling installation where the 5DT-RS is used, the fire separation requirement at the ceiling penetration is managed by the roof support itself at the roof deck level rather than by a separate firestop radiation shield at an interior ceiling framing level. The DuraTech installation instructions for roof-supported configurations specify the correct method for managing the cathedral ceiling penetration, including any fire separation requirements at the angled ceiling assembly. All installation must follow the DuraTech installation instructions for the specific installation configuration to ensure all applicable code requirements for fire separation at the ceiling penetration are correctly addressed.

What building code requirements apply to the chimney termination height above the roof in a 5DT-RS installation?

Building codes require the chimney termination cap to be positioned at least 3 feet above the roof penetration point and at least 2 feet higher than any portion of the building within 10 feet of the chimney. These requirements ensure the chimney terminates above the wind turbulence zone created by the roof and building structure, maintaining consistent positive draft at the termination. When the chimney extends more than approximately 4 to 5 feet above the roof penetration, the 5DT-XRS extended roof bracket is required to provide additional structural bracing for the exposed chimney section against wind loads. The total length of chimney pipe above the roof support must be planned to meet the minimum termination height code requirement after all joint overlap deductions are applied.
