Description

The DuraVent DuraTech Locking Band, part number 5DT-LB, is an optional stainless steel locking band for the DuraTech 5-inch Class A double-wall all-fuel chimney system. The locking band provides an additional mechanical joint security layer at DuraTech pipe-to-pipe connections, elbow connections, and tee connections throughout the chimney run.

It is installed at any DuraTech joint connection where the installer determines that extra security beyond the standard DuraTech twist-lock connection is desirable — for example, at exposed joint locations, in high-wind environments, or in installations where the joint may be subject to vibration or inadvertent mechanical contact over time.

The 5DT-LB is an optional accessory and is not required for a standard DuraTech installation — the DuraTech twist-lock connection is the primary joint retention method for all DuraTech joint connections, and the locking band supplements it with an additional mechanical retention point.

The 5DT-LB is constructed of stainless steel for durability in the high-temperature environment of a Class A chimney installation, where the chimney pipe sections experience significant thermal cycling and the joint hardware must maintain its structural integrity across many years of heating season operation.

The locking band encircles the outer wall of the chimney pipe at the joint connection and provides a positive mechanical retention that supplements the twist-lock's connection to resist joint separation forces. The band is simple to install at any DuraTech 5-inch joint connection point and can be used at as many joint locations as the installer requires. One locking band is needed per joint connection where additional security is desired.

What's Included: One DuraVent 5DT-LB stainless steel locking band for a single DuraTech 5-inch joint connection. Order one per joint location where additional security is desired.

Installation Limits: Optional — not required for standard DuraTech installations. The DuraTech twist-lock connection is the primary joint retention method. All installation must comply with local building codes and the DuraTech installation instructions. DuraVent limited lifetime warranty applies only when installed by a qualified professional installer.

Compatibility: Compatible with all DuraTech 5-inch Class A double-wall chimney pipe, elbow, and tee joint connections throughout the DuraTech 5-inch chimney system.

Product FAQ

If DuraTech uses twist-lock connections, why would a locking band be needed?

The DuraTech twist-lock connection is the primary and standard joint retention method for all DuraTech connections and is adequate for the vast majority of installations. However, certain installation conditions may lead an installer to add a locking band for additional security — for example, in exposed chimney sections subject to high wind loads that could apply lateral forces to the joint, in installations where the chimney pipe may be subject to inadvertent mechanical contact, or in long chimney runs where the cumulative weight of the chimney system above a joint creates larger separation forces than in a shorter run. The locking band provides peace of mind and an additional mechanical retention point at these locations without replacing or modifying the twist-lock — it works alongside it as a secondary retention measure.

How many locking bands are needed for a DuraTech 5-inch chimney installation?

One locking band is needed per joint connection where additional security is desired. Since the 5DT-LB is optional rather than required, the number needed for a specific installation is at the discretion of the installer based on the installation conditions — the total number of pipe-to-pipe connections, elbow connections, and tee connections in the run, combined with the specific factors that make additional joint security desirable at particular locations. An installer may choose to add a locking band to every joint in the installation for maximum security, to only the most critical or vulnerable joints, or not at all in a standard installation where the twist-lock connections are considered fully adequate.

Can the 5DT-LB be used at elbow and tee connections as well as straight pipe joints?

Yes. The 5DT-LB locking band is confirmed for use at pipe-to-pipe connections, elbow connections, and tee connections throughout the DuraTech 5-inch chimney system. All DuraTech 5-inch connections — whether between two straight pipe sections, between a straight pipe section and an elbow, between a straight section and a tee, or at any other joint in the system — use the same twist-lock connection interface and outer diameter, and the 5DT-LB is sized to fit around the 7-inch outer diameter of the 5-inch DuraTech components at any of those joint types. The installer may apply the locking band at any joint type where additional security is desired.

Does adding a locking band affect the installed length calculation of a DuraTech pipe run?

No. The 5DT-LB locking band is a thin band that encircles the outer wall of the chimney pipe at the joint connection and does not add any measurable length to the chimney run's installed height calculation. The installed length calculation for a DuraTech pipe run is determined entirely by the nominal pipe section lengths and the 1-1/4 inch per joint overlap deduction — the presence or absence of a locking band at a joint does not alter the joint overlap geometry or the installed length contribution of any pipe section in the run.

Why is the 5DT-LB made of stainless steel?

Stainless steel is used for the 5DT-LB locking band because the chimney pipe exterior surfaces that the band contacts experience significant thermal cycling during operation — heating up to the outer wall temperature during firing and cooling down again after each heating session. Materials that are not corrosion resistant and thermally stable would degrade, corrode, or lose structural integrity in this environment over time. Stainless steel's corrosion resistance and dimensional stability across the temperature range experienced at the outer wall of a Class A chimney ensure the locking band maintains its mechanical retention function and structural integrity across many years of heating season use without degrading.

What other DuraTech 5-inch accessories complement the 5DT-LB locking band?

The 5DT-LB locking band is used alongside the full range of DuraTech 5-inch pipe sections and fittings — the 5DT-06SS through 5DT-60SSCF straight pipe sections, the 5DT-E15KSS and 5DT-E30KSS elbow kits, the 5DT-STSS tee with cap for through-the-wall installations, the 5DT-CS24 and 5DT-RCS support boxes, the 5DT-FRS firestop radiation shield, and the 5DT-IS attic insulation shield. The 5DT-SC storm collar and roof flashing components at the roof level, and a chimney cap at the termination, complete the system. The locking band can be applied at any joint within this complete system at the installer's discretion.
